2 Welcome Back! Your 2/3 of the way through your freshman year. Congratulations ! As we did the first two quarters, make the most of our time here at PSU. –Have an open mind. –Get to know people different from yourself. –Push yourself to try new things. –Be filled with goodwill, interpret other’s actions in the same light. –Have a positive attitude, look for opportunities not barriers.

4 What’s Happening This Term? Emphasis on exploring solutions to sustainability problems Necessarily involves taking a critical look at how cultural, economic, and political traditions shape our relationship to the natural world Includes: –how the human relationship to nature is understood –the ways economic well-being and satisfaction is measured –how terms such as “sustainability” and “green” are used in the media, by interest groups, organizations, and constituents. Our study this term will roughly follow the themes of the Worldchanging text –Stuff, Shelter, Cities, Community, Business, Politics, Planet

5 What main projects will we do? This I Believe Essay –Includes revisions by peers and instructor, revision plan –This will be a very polished piece of writing to submit to This I Believe Website Regular response essays to the readings –We will read most of the text –Pick one essay in each section to respond to in 300-500 words (7 of these, but will count 6 best) –Can also pick a new essay on www.worldchanging.com to respond towww.worldchanging.com Other homework and quizzes Data Collection and Evaluation Write-up Video Group Presentation –Topic TBD, design, shooting, editing, presenting –Will also contain an individual portion E-Portfolio and Final Reflection Essay –Construct an on-line portfolio illustrating your grasp of the UNST goals –We will continue to learn about web-page design this term

6 How will I be graded? 25% (125 points) Class participation and attendance –Attendance both main and mentor sessions (25 points) –Main session in-class activities (quizzes, worksheets, group work, etc) and general participation in discussions (50 points) –Mentor session in-class activates and general participation in discussions (worksheets, 1st drafts, peer review, group work, etc) (50 points) 75% (375 points) Assignments and Projects

9 First Reading Assignment Read Worldchanging –By this Wednesday (pp. 1 - 26), including looking over table of contents –By next Monday (pp. 29 – 137, except pp. 51- 73) As you read, choose one essay that you want to respond to
