RCE Project Update and Plans Matt Weaver, July 14, 2015 SLAC Technology Innovation Directorate Advanced Data Systems Department
2
2 Outline Recent Developments Plans Underway Hardware Upgrade Paths
3
3 Recent Developments (I) Sergio Maldonado heads the RCE Project effort. Completed developments for LSST support Updated RTEMS toolchain and kernel build (no SMP still) RTEMS ARM SMP support is incomplete and not on the horizon. Unlikely that we can fix this. PGP plugin support PPI version is now integrated into LSST DPM firmware Can make available as an example of PPI Bootloader updates Replace SDK git repositories with a single downloadable.tar.gz image.
4
4 Recent Developments (II) Commissioning a production batch of COBs
5
5 Future Plans (I) Will make Linux a DPM target OS + Developers can customize the kernel + Much more accessible for developers + DTM has always run Linux (HSIO) + DPMs have already run Linux in some field applications - PPI has not been supported in Linux - Much runtime software tools targeted at RTEMS
6
6 Future Plans (II) Will make DPM/DTM firmware source publicly available Allow end-users to implement new features Provide two examples of added protocol implementations - PGP (non-PPI) + Linux driver In 2—3 weeks - PGP (PPI) + Linux driver ~1 month later Learning the SLAC required legal disclaimer Previously considered Xilinx Partial Reconfiguration but found that it is too restrictive for IO reconfiguration (and $$)
7
7 Hardware Upgrade Path (I) Considering COB 10GbE switch → 40GbE Initial switch vendor chosen for this upgrade path - Power measurements later excluded this possibility Found another vendor suitable for ATCA - Adds ~$1200 + up to 60W - Significant software update to DTM Allows 8 x 10GbE (or 2 x 40GbE) out front panel - Alternately can run 10GbE from each DPM (not the zone 2 network) out RTM without switch upgrade
8
8 Hardware Upgrade Path (II) Considering Zynq Ultrascale+ DPM option Same DPM interface (interchangeable) Two tightly coupled processors - one Linux, one real-time kernel (freeRTOS) Considerably more expensive Xilinx pricing Neither hardware upgrade path is well-motivated yet.
