Pablo Picasso Picasso was born in Spain in 1881 but spent most of his adult life in France. He is most noted for his paintings but he was also a sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist, stage designer, poet and playwright. He was 91 when he died. The 3 periods that dominated his work were: Blue Period, Rose Period, Modern (Cubism, Classicism/Surrealism, African Influenced) His mural sized paining, “Guernica,” was in response to the bombing of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War by Germany and Italy in 1937. Depicting the tragedies of war and the suffering it inflicts upon innocent people, the painting is regarded as the single most important work of the 20 th century by some art historians.
