ACTINOMYCOSIS Disease characterized by suppurative and granulomatous inflammatory reaction Formation of abscesses and sinus tracts Purulent discharge containing sulfur granules Actinomyces israelii is most commonly isolated species

Cervicofacial Actinomycosis “Lumpy jaw” Most common form Occurs after oral surgery or in patients with poor oral hygiene Usually presents with nodular lesions at angle of jaw

Thoracic Actinomycosis Occurs usually via aspiration of oropharyngeal secretions containing bacteria Usually presents with cough, shortness of breath, and abnormal breath sounds

Abdominal Actinomycosis Occurs usually following abdominal surgery Usually presents very nonspecifically with some abdominal pain May present with a mass in the lower right quadrant

Pelvic Actinomycosis Occurs in conjunction with IUCD Usually presents with vaginal bleeding or discharge May present with pelvic mass
