The Personal Narrative Last updated July 2008
2
Personal: about oneself (personal property) Personnel: employees (military personnel) A diary is considered personal property. Carrying their weapons, military personnel rushed toward the commotion.
3
Narrative Think about what a narrator does. He narrates or tells a story. In performing or reading a play, a narrator moves the action along by narrating or telling about it. Therefore, a narrative is something told in story form.
4
A personal narrative is… A truestory About you! Honest, it really happened!
5
How do I get started on the task of writing a personal narrative?
6
Step 1 Make a list of interesting or humorous experiences you’ve had.
7
Step 2 Consider your list carefully. Cross out those things that aren’t MAINLY about you and those that you can’t remember very well. –1. The time my brother broke his arm –2. My parents accidentally left me at the mall when I was four months old. –3. My Florida vacation when I was nine. –4. The shaving cream/ water balloon battle I had at camp last month.
8
Consider your audience: TeacherFriend Younger, random, cloned children living on the beach Who will be reading or listening to your story?
9
Ways to tell about your real-life experience: Chronological order Chronos is the Greek god of time.
