Individual Project Interim Report. Dynamic microphone.
2
The project proposal was, sort of, a combination between idea’s of my own, and a mix of Jon’s microphone proposal. I wanted to investigate microphones to give me a broader understanding of how they worked, how they were built, and how best to use them. Through the project and my research I hope I will be able to fully understand the different types of microphone and hence how and when to use them, the main objective to this is to hopefully help me in future circumstances. Project Proposal

Sound waves (1) hit a diaphragm (2). The vibrations from the diaphragm, causes a length of coil (3) wrapped around a permanent magnet (4) to move up and down, cutting a magnetic field. When this magnetic field is cut an electrical signal can be found at the output (5) The Dynamic Microphone - The moving coil

My main reference material. Contains information regarding how microphones work, their usage as well as how they're made and materials used to make them. The microphone book. John Eargle. Used in my preliminary research to fully understand the concept of how a dynamic microphone worked. Wasn’t really much help after that. Sound recording & reproduction’. Glyn Alkin. Literature review

Ordered various sizes of magnets, to act as my microphones permanent magnet. Tested the magnets in multiple size indents to act as the permanent magnet housing. Made up an initial prototype with the strongest (highest output) magnet, a cellophane diaphragm connected to greaseproof paper with coil wrapped around. (see left)
