How to Complete Your Professional Development Plan (PDP) A guide to becoming recertified as a professional educator in the state of Wisconsin Amy E. Hand Project 2: Instructional Plan EDCI 566 Dr. Marisa Exter Dr. Jea Choi April 14, 2015

Topic The overall concept of this lesson is on the process of completing and submitting a Professional Development Plan (PDP) to become recertified as a professional educator in the state of Wisconsin. This is a procedure required by Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction every five years.

Target Audience The lesson is primarily developed for those teachers going through the PDP process for the first time; making the transition from initial educator to professional educator. However, any teacher who is required to complete a PDP to become recertified can benefit from this lesson.

Curriculum Links This is a stand-alone, digital lesson, that should be presented towards the end of an initial educator’s first year of teaching. This is when the PDP cycle actually begins for a new teacher. I see this as one of nine topics presented as part of the new teacher orientation training sessions offered once a month by the district Human Resources Department.

Objectives After completing this lesson, educators will understand the components of the PDP After completing this lesson, educators will understand the PDP five-year cycle After completing this lesson, educators will be able to complete their PDP After completing this lesson, educators will be able to select their PDP review team

Materials/Timing Initial educators do not need to complete anything prior to attending this training session. The plan would be for newly hired teachers to view this digital job aid as they complete the steps of filling in their PDP paperwork. This is a self- paced digital job aid, and viewers can utilize the aid as long or as many times as needed.

Scope and Sequence 1. PDP Cycle and quick overview of the components of the PDP 2. Step 1 – Self Reflection 3. Step 2a – Description of School and teaching situation 4. Step 2b – Description of Goal 5. Step 2c – Rationale for Goal 6. Step 2d – Plan for Assessing Goal 7. Step 2e – Plan to meet Goal Using Glogster, each will have a short video with voice and visual cues. These videos will be placed on a timeline/sequence in order of the steps to be completed along with the title of each step and a pictorial reminder.

Supplemental Materials Participants will need access to the WECAN website to complete their individual PDP paperwork Listed in the appendix are sample evaluations that could be used if this is shown as a face-to-face presentation. I would probably create a Google Form and a link within the Gloster to an evaluation if used as an online element.

Evaluation of Participants Participants will not be formally evaluated by the presenter. Their interactive participation however, will lead to a stronger understanding of the PDP cycle and process. Participants will complete a Kirkpatrick-style Level 3 self- evaluation survey of their comfort with the components of the PDP process after this training session (Kirkpatrick, 2006, p.58).

Evaluation of Lesson To evaluate the effectiveness of this presentation, participants will complete a Kirkpatrick-style Level 1 evaluation. This will measure satisfaction using a quantitative, 5-point scale for each of the listed objectives as well as the environment of the training session and the efficiency of the presenter (Kirkpatrick, 2006, p. 31).

Multimedia Principles Signaling Principle: People learn more deeply from a multimedia message when cues are added that highlight the organization of the essential materials (Mayer, 2014, p.280). Segmenting Principle: Load- reducing method by breaking the lesson into manageable learner-controlled segments (Mayer, 2014, 318).
