1674 Anton Van Leeuwenhoek- Light Microscope (continually improved) pond water 1838 Matthias Schleiden- all plants composed of cells 1839 Theodor Schwann- all animals composed of cells 1855 Rudolf Virchow- All cells come from other living cells 1931- Max Knoll and Ernst Ruska developed the electron microscope

Cell Theory All living things are composed of cells New cells are produced from existing cells Cells are the basic unit of life Cell size 0.2 micrometers- 1000 micrometers (1 million micrometers are in 1m) Bacteria lives in the ocean Paramecium

Prokaryotes - No nucleus- genetic material is not bound in a membrane to form a nucleus, suspended in cytoplasm. Lacks membrane bound organelles Single-celled - Ex: bacteria - has a cell wall, cell membrane, cytoplasm, DNA and ribosome

Eukaryotes - Larger more complex some are specialized - Has a membrane bound nucleus which contains the DNA - Contains organelles - Unicellular and multicellular, ex: plants, animals, fungi and protists

Unicellular organisms - One cell performs all the organisms’ functions for life - Ex: yeast (fungi), amoeba and volvox (algae)

Multicellular - Many celled - Cells are specialized for different tasks Ex: Plants have cells containing chloroplasts for making food Ex: Animals have red blood cells to carry oxygen
