Read page 194 “Genghis Khan” –Genghis Khan was elected leader of the Mongol people. –Genghis Khan formed an army of over 100,000 and fought to conquer lands from his election to his death.

The Mongols They were the most skilled fighting force in the world. They demanded tribute (money) from people that they conquered. They conquered lands along the Silk Road. Mongols were very cruel and sought to terrorize people.

Empire Builders Read “Empire Builders” pg. 194-195 Many people surrendered without even fighting them. The Mongols created the largest empire in history. The Mongols grew wealthy because they taxed traders in their empire. Genghis Khan’s grandson, Kublai Khan, conquered China.

The Significance of the Mongols Pg 196 – 4 th paragraph **The Mongols learned from the people they conquered and often adopted their beliefs and customs. For example, Mongols near the Arabian peninsula accepted Islam. Mongols near China learned of gunpowder and the fire lance.

The Significance of the Mongols Pg 197 – The Mongol empire stretched from China to Eastern Europe. The Mongols kept peace within their empire. China prospered under Kublai Khan and Mongol rule. China reached the height of its wealth and power under Mongol rule.
