Finishing up the “7 purposes of the Law” A. It was not given so that men could be successful in keeping it. B. It was given to reveal the holiness of God. C. It was given to keep Israel a holy and distinct people.
3
D. It was the middle wall of division between Jew and Gentile. E. It was given to reveal sin. F. It was given to increase sin and the strength of it. G. It was given to show us our utter ruin. H. It was given to lead us to Christ. Exodus 12:13) And when I see the blood, I will pass over you;
4
Romans 3:25) whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed, What does propitiation mean? It means “Mercy Seat” How holy and sufficient is Christ’s Blood? First let’s look at the “Mercy Seat”
5
Exodus 25:17) “You shall make a mercy seat of pure gold; three feet nine inches, and its width is to be two feet three inches. 18) “And you shall make two cherubim of gold; of hammered work you shall make them at the two ends of the mercy seat. 19) “Make one cherub at one end, and the other cherub at the other end; you shall make the cherubim at the two ends of it of one piece with the mercy seat.

20) “And the cherubim shall stretch out their wings above, covering the mercy seat with their wings, and they shall face one another; the faces of the cherubim shall be toward the mercy seat. 21) “You shall put the mercy seat on top of the ark, and in the ark you shall put the Testimony that I will give you. 22) “And there I will meet with you, and I will speak with you from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubim which are on the ark of the Testimony, about everything which I will give you in commandment to the children of Israel.

Next let’s look at what was involved in order to stand before God inside the veil. Lev 16:2 and the LORD said to Moses: “Tell Aaron your brother not to come at just any time into the Holy Place inside the veil, before the mercy seat which is on the ark, lest he die; for I will appear in the cloud above the mercy seat.

3) “In this way Aaron is to enter into the sanctuary – with a young bull for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt offering. 4) He must put on a holy linen tunic, linen leggings are to cover his body, and he is to wrap himself with a linen sash and wrap his head with a linen turban. They are holy garments, so he must bathe his body in water and put them on.

5) He must also take two male goats from the congregation of the Israelites for a sin offering and one ram for a burnt offering. 6) Then Aaron is to present the sin offering bull which is for himself and is to make atonement on behalf of himself and his household. 7) He must then take the two goats and stand them before the LORD at the entrance of the Meeting Tent,
10
8) and Aaron is to cast lots over the two goats, one lot for the LORD and one lot for the scapegoat. 9) Aaron must then present the goat which has been designated by lot for the LORD, and he is to make it a sin offering, 10) “But the goat on which the lot fell to be the scapegoat shall be presented alive before the LORD, to make atonement upon it, and to let it go as the scapegoat into the wilderness.
11
11) “Aaron is to present the sin offering bull which is for himself, and he is to make atonement on behalf of himself and his household. He is to slaughter the sin offering bull which is for himself, 12) and take a censer full of coals of fire from the altar before the LORD and a full double handful of finely ground fragrant incense, and bring them inside the veil-canopy.
12
13) “And he shall put the incense on the fire before the LORD, that the cloud of incense may cover the mercy seat that is on the Testimony, lest he die. 14) “He shall take some of the blood of the bull and sprinkle it with his finger on the mercy seat on the east side; and before the mercy seat he shall sprinkle some of the blood with his finger seven times.
13
15) “Then he shall kill the goat of the sin offering, which is for the people, bring its blood inside the veil, do with that blood as he did with the blood of the bull, and sprinkle it on the mercy seat and before the mercy seat. Hebrews 10:19) Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, 20) by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh,
14
Hebrews 9:12) Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His (Jesus) own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal (perpetual) redemption. 13) For if the blood of bulls and goats and the ashes of a heifer, sprinkling the unclean, sanctifies for the purifying of the flesh, 14) how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?
15
Romans 5:9) Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. Eph 1: 7) In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace. Eph 2:13) But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. Col 1:14) in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.
16
Col 1:20) and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross. Where Are you in this picture? Questions/comments???? Next week: “Seven sticking points that Christians struggle with concerning the Law.”
