History of St Michael Early Christians prayed to St. Michael to care for the sick In Constantinople and Rome St. Michael was a great heavenly physician In Normandy St. Michael is the patron of mariners in his famous sanctuary at Mont- saint-Michel in the Diosese of Coutances.

Images of St. Michael In Art St. Michael is represented as an angelic warrior, fully armed with helmet, sword and shield (often the shield bears the Latin inscription : Quis ut Deus), standing over the dragon, whom he sometimes pierces with a lance. He also holds a pair of scales in which he weighs the souls of the departed.

Michaelmas Day In England and other countries traditionally for hundreds of years Michaelmas Day is the regular day for settling rents and accounts. This is less commonly celebrated today.

St Michael in War and Battle The name Michael signifies “who is like God” and was the War cry of the good angels in the battle fought in heaven against Satan and his followers. Holy Scriptures describe Michael as “one of the chief princes”. St. Michael was seen as the “leader of the forces of heaven in their triumph over the powers of hell”. He has been especially honoured and invoked as patron and protector by the church from the time of the Apostles

The Archangel Although St. Michael is always described and recognised as “the Archangel”. The Greek fathers and many others place him over all the angels – as Prince of the Seraphim. St. Michael is the patron of grocers, mariners, paratroopers, police and sickness.
