5 Setting  Setting is the time and place of the story  Writers create setting through the following: details that suggest the time of day, year, season or historical period details that suggest the time of day, year, season or historical period Descriptions of characters, clothing, buildings, weather and landscapes Descriptions of characters, clothing, buildings, weather and landscapes

6 Mood  Mood is the feeling or atmosphere that a writer creates for readers.  Mood is developed through a writer’s use of imagery and choice of words and details.  Setting details help to establish a mood.

7 Imagery  The use of language to evoke a picture or a concrete sensation of a person, thing, place or experience.

12 External Conflict  character struggles against outside forces …person against another person, person against society, person against nature….

13 Understanding Cause & Effect  Cause is why something happens  Effect is the result of some event or action  Understanding cause/effect can help you understand what happens in the plot, and why it happens  *As you read “The Bass, the River and Sheila Mant” think about the causes behind the narrator’s behavior. Think about the effects of the girl’s words and actions.

15 Exposition  This part of the plot introduces the setting and characters and establishes a mood.  It may also reveal the conflict or set the stage for it.

16 Rising Action  Complications arise as the main character struggles to resolve the conflict.  The “plot thickens” as suspense builds.  All the actions that take place before the climax.

17 Climax  The climax is the turning point in the story and the moment of greatest suspense.  Often the main character makes a decision or takes an action that makes the outcome of the conflict clear.  Does not always occur in the middle of the story.

18 Falling Action  This stage shows the results of the decision or action that happened at the climax.  Tension eases as the conflict is resolved.

19 Resolution  The resolution reveals the final outcome of the story and ties up any loose ends.
