Chemical & physical properties 8th Grade Science
2
Everything is made of chemicals. There are 92 natural elements. They are arranged on the periodic table. Each element is composed of extremely small particals called atoms.
3
An atom is the smallest particle of any element that still has the characteristics of that element. However, atoms are made up of even smaller particles called protons, neutrons, and electrons. The electrons, protons, and neutrons are is what gives the element its properties.
4
Periodic Table A table in which elements are arranged in order of increasing atomic number. Elements with similar properties are arranged in the same column (called a group or family).
5
All atoms of a given element are identical. For example… all oxygen atoms are the same. Each element is different from each other and each have different properties.
6
The properties of matter can be grouped into two categories: physical and chemical properties.
7
Physical properties... Properties we can measure without changing the identity of the matter Examples: color density odor melting point boiling point hardness Solubility (dissolving in a liquid)
8
What are some physical properties of vinegar? smell its a liquid clear taste bitter
9
Chemical properties... describes an object/substances’ ability to change into something new. Ex: Flammability & Reactivity
10
Some examples of chemical properties are... paper burns iron rusts silver doesn’t react w/water
11
In each of these, the substances chemical property is its tendency to: react tarnish corrode explode
12
Lets Review… Physical Properties: properties we can measure without changing the identity of the matter. Chemical Properties: a substances ability to change into something new. We use these properties to distinguish chemicals from one another.
13
Solubility… The ability of a substance to dissolve in a liquid Why is this a physical property?
14
Physical vs. chemical properties Pile of Wood Physical Property: grainy texture Chemical Property: Flammable
15
PHYSICAL VS. CHEMICAL PROPERTIES Baking Soda Physical Property: white powder Chemical Property: reacts with vinegar to produce bubbles
16
Chemical vs. physical properties Iron Physical Property: Malleable (able to be shaped) Chemical Property: Reacts with oxygen to form rust
17
Now each table is going to get an object. Your job is to list as many physical and chemical properties as you can about your object. Be ready to share what you learn with the class!
18
Objects for the tables… Paper Candle Bouncy ball Christmas lights Star Fish Crystal Light packet Toy Car Sponge Skeleton Man L l
