By the end of presentation participants will be able to know Definition of global warming and green house effect. Difference between global warming and green house effect. Causes. Effects. Prevention.
3
“Global warming is the observed and projected increases in the average temperature of Earth's atmosphere and oceans.”
4
“The gases which allow the incoming solar radiation to reach earth’s surface but absorb the thermal radiation emitted from the earth’s surface are called green house gases and the effect is called green house effect”.
5
Many people merge the terms global warming and green house effect with each other. Global warming is the result of green house effect. Is Green house effect a natural process and necessary. Yes it is a natural process. it is important in order to prevent lowering of earth temperature (to keep average 30c).
6
There are two major effects of global warming: Increase of temperature on the earth by about 3° to 5° C (5.4° to 9° Fahrenheit) by the year 2100. Rise of sea levels by at least 25 meters (82 feet) by the year 2100. 1. Due to thermal expansion of ocean. 2. Melting of land ice. Cont…

They increase the frequency, duration, and intensity of floods, droughts, heat waves, and tornadoes. Other effects of global warming include higher or lower agricultural yields, reduced summer stream flows, species extinctions. As further effects of global warming, diseases like malaria are returning into areas where they have been extinguished earlier. Cont…

Due to the increase in the atmosphere of greenhouse gas concentrations like Water vapor. Carbon dioxide (CO 2 ). Methane. Ozone. Nitrogen oxides. CFC’s. Deforestation increases the severity of global warming as well. Greenhouse gases are those gases that contribute to the greenhouse effect. The largest contributing source of greenhouse gas is the burning of fossil fuels leading to the emission of carbon dioxide.
11
The oceans are no longer able to store carbon as they have in the past. The ocean is a huge carbon sink, holding about 50 times as much carbon as the atmosphere.

Recent investigations have shown that inconceivable catastrophic changes in the environment will take place as soon as the concentration of CO 2 in the atmosphere reaches the level of about 450 ppm. Today's concentration is already at 380 ppm and it raises on average 2 - 3 ppm each year, so that the critical value will be reached in approximately 25 to 30 years from now.

Only a drastic reduction of the waste gas emissions in the very near future can stop this trend.
