DISCLAIMER Most of the ideas from this powerpoint have been taken from Wilmarth (2010). Heidi Hayes Jacobs book is a must read for 21 st Century Educators Yes this power point is biased because I think this is the way that 21 st Century education is going (Its one of my big ideas, I am a digital disciple) and I want to make you think about where you want to go and perhaps how might be the best way to get there in light of… The power of TECHNOLOGY

THE BIG IDEA Technology is a game changer in EDUCATION It is a only a tool but it is reshaping PEDAGOGY

FOCUS OF SESSION This power point examines ideas motivated by technology 1.Social Production of Knowledge 2.Social Networking of Identity Real IMPLICATIONS for culture, society, learning and teaching

THE BIG IDEA Our world is smaller and more connected because of technology 1.What does this mean 2.What is the role of technology in this trend BIG QUESTION: As we touch, experience and discover a new world through a technological lenses. Where is truth going to be found?

THE BIG IMPLICATION Some more questions about technology Are there new trends Are there profound effects Is the creation of Knowledge being changed Is the authority of Knowledge being changed So what is the implication for 21 st Century ECE & Primary Education?

THE BIG IMPLICATION Is LITERACY being transformed ( 3 R’s are now 4 C’s) Is the entire system being transformed Built on linear knowledge Held by hierarchical structures Institutionalized Basis for the framework of OUR system Schools Pedagogy Policy

A NEW SYSTEM A Hypothesis All learning is SOCIAL and is being constantly changed by technological advances. Origins of this Idea Development of Alphabet ended oral tradition and started the literate era Printing press ended Scholastic era and developed era of Mass literacy in the cultural vernacular Social Media ended the literate era and is creating the post literate era What do you think?

AN ERA OF SOCIAL PRODUCTION Some facts 2008 Google engineers announced their were 1 trillion unique URLS (web addresses) Several billion webpages being added everyday So what causes this rate of creating, copying, mixing and remixing of information Social Production What is powering this trend Web 2.0 which means the cost of publishing information is almost ZERO

AN ERA OF SOCIAL PRODUCTION The notion of literary authority has changed in the last five years Debate: Wikipedia vs Encyclopedia Britannica

AN ERA OF SOCIAL PRODUCTION What do you think about this quote “Are students improving their ability to think critically, to express them selves and to develop useable literacies by participating” How are they going to do it

AN ERA OF SOCIAL PRODUCTION Key Idea: Students no longer are just consumers of content. They create it and the rate of construction is rapidly increasing How can you facilitate this in your context? Key Idea: Knowledge is no longer categorized and organized by experts it is done by everyone It is called Digital Disorder

AN ERA OF SOCIAL PRODUCTION Tree of Knowledge Vs The Cloud Organized in the Dewey Information Bazaar Decimal System Knowledge is Knowledge is FIXED CONSTANTLY reconstructed R & R R & R = Relevance and Relationship changing shape, pattern

AN ERA OF SOCIAL PRODUCTION Pros & Con’s Brainstorm in small group pros and cons that you can think of for your educational context of Social Production of Knowledge. Decide which is the number one Pro and Con and why. Share with the class

AN ERA OF SOCIAL PRODUCTION The development of Learning will be more active Everyone will participate Mash ups Crowd sourcing Class sourcing Open Source Learning We are going back to the future – apprentice model – learn by doing Everything online is Socially Produced You will teach Socially Produced knowledge in a Socially Produced setting

AN ERA OF SOCIAL PRODUCTION Some more proof you say! Social Production has exploded since 2000 Powered by two main forces the Blog and Wiki Now we also have Apps, what else is on the Horizon? Digital Social Networking is part of being U20 Digital Natives compared to Digital Immigrants compared to Digital… shall we say

THE SOCIAL NETWORK Social Production via Social Networking will be the biggest game changer of our generation It will reshape Learning and Teaching What it means to be educated The concept of Educational Identity The flux has begun, you are part of it, we don’t really understand it We have a real problem with the short cycle of innovation and change (The semantic web is here, what about media grids) My brain hurts just thinking about it!

THE SOCIAL NETWORK The traditional learning community is the… School/Centre Identity is formed through its systems, culture, values “I am a NZer, I am a Grammar Boy”

THE SOCIAL NETWORK How are online communities going to influence learning Organic Global Internet based – places for family, cultures, sub cultures, all sorts of ideas that shape self identity “I am an individual, I have my own system” Result: We are going to see the emergence of New Learning Identities

THE SOCIAL NETWORK Did I mention… Social Networks are constantly changing The focus needs to be relationships rather than technology

THE SOCIAL NETWORK So what does this mean for national standards or any form of testing for that matter Will social networking and production make it redundant Could the disengaged class students be a highly engaged learner in another space. Risks Risks Risks (it would be rude not to mention them) Privacy Safety Humanistic complementarity Questions for the Christian Educator Is the social production of knowledge a Christian principle What does the Bible say about Social Networks PHDS please!!!

ONE THING I CAN TELL YOU FOR FREE Because of Technology Social Production Social Networking In the 21 st Century The Future of Learning will be Open The Future of Learning will be Social The Future of Learning will be Personal The Future of Learning will be Augmented The Future of Learning will become Non Touch Steven Wheeler (2011) check him out on Twitter #timbuckteeth
