Lesson 8.2.1 - Multiplying Exponents Quote of the Day – “Being defeated is often a temporary condition, giving up is what makes it permanent” Objective - I will be able to multiply exponential numbers which have the same base and be able to raise an exponential number to another power. Homework --> Exponents and Multiplication Worksheet
2
Three Rules for Multiplying Exponents: Rule 1: Products of Powers --> When Multiplying exponential numbers with EXACTLY THE SAME BASE, ADD the exponents and place that sum as the exponent on the original base. Ex; 5 3. 5 4 = 5 (3 + 4) = 5 7 X 2. X 7 = X (2 + 7) = X 9
3
Rule 2: Powers of a Power --> When raising an exponential number to another power MULTIPLY the exponents and place the product as the exponent on the original base. Ex; (5 3 ) 4 = 5 (3. 4) = 5 12 (X 2 ) 7 = X (2. 7) = X 14
4
Rule 3: Powers of a Product --> When Raising a product to a power, raise EVERY base to the power that is outside of the parenthesis. Ex; (3X 2 Y 4 Z 6 ) 5 = 3 (1. 5). X (2. 5). Y (4. 5). Z (6. 5) = 3 5 X 10 Y 20 Z 30
