Select a Domain name A domain name is the name you wish to use to indentify your website. It is similar to your home address. If people ask where you live … what would you say? Now, what will you say if they ask where your website lives? How to pick the right domain name? –Not too long –Not too vague –Not too close to another website’s name –Not too hard to say or spell or remember.com vs..org vs..net vs. who cares? Check availability and purchase a domain through a legitimate provider What to do when or if you find out that the domain name you wanted is already taken?

The cream always rises to the top

Select a web host A web host is a provider that rents you space on their server so you can store your website. Think of it as a gigantic building, like Costco, full of millions of little hard drives. Each of these hard drives represent a website where files are stored. Files stored with a web host can either be public or private based on how you choose to set your preferences. Let’s use the prior example regarding your home address and how it’s similar to a domain name. At any time someone can come visit your home. They can walk around your neighborhood, see your new landscaping & even knock on your door to ask a question. This is an example of files marked public. What they cannot do is see the inside of your house unless you let them and will only get their questions answered if you choose to open the door and respond. This is an example of files marked private. When buying a home: Many people feel they need the largest house they can find even though they live alone, choose to live in a one bedroom when they have 9 kids, never lock their front door and/or choose to live in a community based on the amenities offered to its residents. Shop around for a web host and make a decision based on what makes most sense for your website skill level and storage needs.

On your mark … Get set … Let’s go

Don’t say I didn’t warn you Self-Service vs. Full-Service You get what you pay for Everyone has a lot to say until you ask them to write it down Photos, brochures, flyers and reports are useless until they are electronic Humility good … Stupidity bad People don’t care as much as you do Less is more Testosterone vs. Reality Black is not the new Black Insecurity breeds anxiety … confidence is like Xanax Doing it alone is never as much fun as doing it with others Don’t reinvent the wheel … rather customize your own with all that’s available Ideas cannot stand alone

Like Staples... That was easy.

Start by defining your pages Pages should be seen as chapters in a book. They are the main categories or collections of information you plan to use to summarize your church, business or person. These pages are very high-level indicators and will be refined as you continue to define you website. This can take people days & months to figure out or you can just use these: Home | About | Services | Gallery | Contact Anything more is often ego driven, not needed or too premature. The last thing you want is too much information, which could leave visitors no reason to inquire further or misinterpret your message. As a result they may rationalize to themselves that your offerings, philosophy and/or membership is just not a good fit for them. Heroin is addictive for a reason … it always leaves people searching for more. Your goal is to inform visitors at a high level and let their curiosity act as a springboard for you to start building effective and informed relationships.

Break it on down Making a list and checking it twice: About | Services | Gallery | Contact

No Place like home

Free Your Mind Home Page – is the first page you see of a website when entering a domain name. This is my favorite page because it offers the designer full creative freedom.

Escape the silence

Where it all comes together The last thing you wanna do is spend forever writing an outline of your website and its functionality, layout and design. Yes, that means step out of your little grown up box, roll up your sleeves and meet your old childhood friend Miss Crayola. Let me help you take the first step … everyone change seats … I don’t care where you sit but you cannot sit where you are right now. Storyboarding a website can be uncomfortable, but it is essential. By changing seats, you are seeing the world from a completely new perspective. Now its time to see your website the same way. Storyboarding allows you to bring structure to your pages, logic to your lists and create a visual map to reference as you assign roles, define hierarchy and get lost along the way.
