JEFFERSON V. BURR In the 1800 election, two Democratic-Republicans ran for President: Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr. John Adams ran for re-election as the Federalist candidate. He lost.

THEY TIED! Jefferson and Burr each got 73 electoral votes – they tied! So, who won? How did they decide that? The Constitution says that if no one gets a majority, the House of Representatives will vote to decide the winner.

SO WHO WON?!?!?! The House voted 35 times over 7 days. On the 36 th vote, Alexander Hamilton decided to have the Federalists support Jefferson, because he hated Burr Jefferson wins, and Burr becomes VP. Burr and Hamilton eventually fight a duel. Burr wins; Hamilton died.

CHANGING POWER The election of 1800 was the first time the Presidency changed from one party to another There was a worry that the Federalists would not give up their power, but they did. A peaceful change in power took place, something rare in the world until the United States came along
