Axolotl Mexican Dominik Petrek
2
What is it ? My favourite animal is Axolotl Mexican. His scientific name is Ambystoma mexicanum. The name "Axolotl" comes from the Aztec language - translation is "water-dog" (from "atl" for water and "xolotl", which means dog). Axolotl is very strange-looking creature from Mexico.
3
What is it ? It is an endangered and protected animal. It's amphibian and salamander. All its life it is in the larval stage and still is able to reproduce.
4
What does it look like ? The colour of axolotl is brown, pink, albino, grey or almost black. Here on the pictures is an albino, a golden albino, a pink and a black. An adult axolotl can reach a size from 18 to 35 cm in length. Typical adult length is somewhere between 20 and 28 cm.
5
What does it look like ? The diagram of the development of the Axolotl, from an egg to an adult.
6
What does it look like ? Axolotl´s head is wide. Its limbs are underdeveloped. It has three pairs of external gill behind his head. External gills are used for respiration.
7
Where does it live ? Axolotl lives in water. The Axolotl lives only in Lake Xochimilco and Lake Chalco in central Mexico. Unfortunately, Lake Chalco no longer exists, and Lake Xochimilco is now only a network of canals and lagoons.
8
What does it eat ? The axolotl is meat-eater, it consumes small fauna - snails, worms, insects and small fish and amphibians. Axolotls locate food by smell.
9
Interesting... Axolotls are used in scientific research due to their ability to regenerate limbs. The axolotl is able of complete limb re-growth.
10
Why do I like it ? I like it because of its interesting but difficult name. I like it because he looks like he is smiling. The Axolotl is a fascinating creature for a number of reasons - its funny looks, its ability to regenerate, and the phenomenon known as neoteny.
