3  Natives did not think that the U.S. have authority over them.  Fighting breaks out – Natives resist the U.S.

4  1790’s - 1795

5  Northwest territory – between Appalachian Mtns and the Mississippi River

6  U.S feared European interest in the area.  Wanted complete control over the area and everyone in it.

7  Fighting breaks out between the Natives and the United States.  Battle of Fallen Timbers  Impact – Native Americans lose all hope of keeping the land in the Northwest Territory.

8  Who?  Farmers vs. United States government

9  Tax on whiskey (grain) led to attacks on tax collectors.

10  July 1794

11  Western Penn

12  Tax on whiskey – caused farmers to lose money.

13  G.W. sends in U.S. army to crush farmers resistance.

14  G. W. used as an example: government would use force when necessary to maintain order  Citizens could change laws peacefully, not through violence.
