2. 1.summary- short description of a longer work; has main idea and details; written so that people can read this shorter version and still understand the text 2. paraphrase- restate the author’s words in your own (think research note cards) 3. critique- writer’s opinion

3. 4.stage directions- define movement on stage and tell how lines should be delivered; (enters stage right) or [laughing wickedly] 5.monologue- long speech spoken by an actor- other characters are on the stage 6.soliloquy- “solo” - a monologue spoken by an actor when they think they’re alone- thinking aloud- reveals the innermost thoughts and feelings of the character 7.dialogue- speech of the actors 8.aside- comment given to the audience to reveal a thought or feeling

The lake was a silver mirror. 11.personification- giving human characteristics to something not human The tree waved in the wind. 12.onomatopoeia-word that imitates a sound Buzz, bang, boom, fizz, pop, twang, plop

5. 13.Simile-comparison that uses like or as Her smile is like sunshine on a cloudy day. 14.symbolism-uses a person, place, or object to represent something completely different Ex. The marigolds represent beauty. 15.allusion-implied or indirect reference to a person, place, or thing that is fictitious, historical, or real

6. 16.Understatement- minimizes or lessens the importance (opposite of hyperbole) Ex. In the desert heat, a character says, “My, it’s warm today.” 17.paradox- statement that at first seems to be a contradiction but reveals a truth ex. A little learning is a dangerous thing. Slow and steady wins the race.

7. 18. allegory- narrative in which characters and settings stand for abstract ideas or moral qualities; story has 2 meanings- literal and symbolic Ex. Characters in Animal Farm – Justice, Deceit, Vanity; Wizard of Oz is an allegory. 19. parable- fable or story with a moral (lesson)

10. 21. satire- a literary work that makes fun of human follies; writing that ridicules something- person, groups, humanity- in order to reveal a weakness (usually by using sarcasm, irony, parody) Ex. Gulliver’s Travels, Scary Movie, political cartoons

11. 22.irony-words are used to show the opposite of the actual meaning. The three kinds of irony are: Verbal irony - where what you mean to say is different from the words you use Situational irony - compares what is expected to happen with what actually does happen Dramatic irony - uses a narrative to give the audience more information about the story than the character knows
