Josef Stalin  Came into power position once new government, based off of Karl Marx’s ideas, was created.  Opposed Leon Trotsky, another key power player  Eliminated all who opposed him  Used scare tactics to keep people in line, as he was not a great speaker  Made USSR into a world power  Killed more people during his reign than Hitler

Renaming of Russia to USSR  began when Russia and three other republics: Belorussia, Ukraine and the Transcaucasian Republic (composed of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia) decided to join and create their own country  first country in the world to be based on Marxist socialism  was known as USSR from 1922 to 1991

Neighboring/supportive countries and leaders of the time  Capitalist governments of England (Great Britain) and the United States under the power of Franklin D. Roosevelt and Winston Churchhill tried to work with Stalin.  These 3 leaders, known as the Big 3, met after WWII at the Yelta Conference to figure out how to build up war-torn countries.  Cold War started and all hope for working together was gone.

Neighboring/competing countries and leaders  Germany, under the leadership of Hitler, was very much against the USSR and what it initially stood for.  Surprisingly, Stalin and Hitler later signed a non-aggression pact, stunning the world.  Later, Hitler went against the pact when he overtook Poland during the war.

Red October  took place in October of 1917  uprising of the people of Russia against Czar Nicholas  this battle helped ignite plans to create a government based off of Karl Marx’s ideas  The Bolshevik party was then formed, which later came to be known as the Communist party.

Communism  Economic and social system in which all (or nearly all) property and resources are collectively owned by a classless society and not by individual citizens.  Based on the 1848 publication 'Communist Manifesto' by two German political philosophers, Karl Marx (1818-1883) and his close associate Friedrich Engels (1820-1895)  Each person works and is paid according to their abilities and needs.

Religion  Prior to revolution, Russia’s primary religion was Russian Orthodox (Christianity).  After revolution, the USSR became the first state to have, as an ideological objective, the elimination of religion and its replacement with universal atheism.  The communist regime confiscated religious property, ridiculed religion, harassed believers, and propagated atheism in schools.  Later, religion was allowed back solely for the sake of allowing people to find hope during desperate times.
