Welcome Back!!! 4 th Grade Open House 2012

Mrs. Shannon Tanner I am beginning my 16 th year teaching. This is my 12 th year in fourth grade. I have been married for 15 years (Phil) and have two children. Meredith (10) and Monica (5). We love going to the zoo and all things Disney. I am a huge UofL fan!!!! I especially love Cardinal basketball. I have been known to tease my UK students and they have been known to get me back! I watched UofL lose to Morehead State in this very classroom.

Communication How to reach me?? Best way to reach me is email stanner@sna-panthers.org Use your child’s planner to communicate with us.

Fourth Grade Schedule This year students in the fourth grade will have three teachers. Mrs. Green will teach reading. Mrs. Wheeler will teach english and science. Mrs. Tanner will teach math, social studies, and religion. Special Areas will be: Spanish- Wednesday Art- Friday P.E.- Thursday Music- Thursday Computer-Monday Library- Tuesday

Friday Folders Each week (with the exception of a few) students will bring home their Friday Folders. The Friday Folder includes the work your child did that week. It also includes special announcements. Please get in the habit of reviewing the work in the folder. This should give you an idea of how your child is doing in class. Once you have reviewed the work, please sign the sheet in the folder indicating you have received the information.

PowerSchool Grades are generally posted twice a month. Some classes will have more grades than others. If you have questions or concerns, please contact us immediately. Students have their user names and passwords in the front of their planners.

Discipline Procedures Students are expected to treat everyone with respect. This includes their teachers and classmates. If a student does not respect others through their actions or words, they will receive a “white slip”. Generally teachers will provide students with at least one warning before giving the discipline slip. However it is at the teacher’s discretion when a student deserves a discipline slip. Discipline forms are signed by the parents and kept on file for the trimester. These forms are considered when determining a conduct grade on the report card.

Missing Assignments Homework is given to help students practice the skills that they have learned. Homework is also given to help us assess what your child has learned. Completing homework is essential. When students do not complete homework it disrupts the whole class. Please help your child by checking their planners each night and making sure they have everything they need for the next morning. Students who do not complete their assignments are subject to receiving a “white slip”. These slips will be kept on file for the trimester. These forms will be taken into consideration when determining a study skills grade on the report card. Our handbook states that students should spend 40-50 minutes each night on homework. This includes studying and reading.

Math Notes Practice multiplication and division facts daily Simple Solutions-lessons every Mon-Thurs. Review day Friday- Quiz on Wednesdays Use the St. Nicholas Academy 4th Grade - website to link to math book resources and games to reinforce skills that have been taught website

Mrs. Tanner’s Center Information Students complete seven centers in one week Students have 20 minutes to work with their group on each task Each week students will be given an evidence checklist. As they complete a task, they check it off. If students are unable to finish a center task in the 20 minutes they are given, they can work on it for homework. Every Friday students will bring home their center folders. Please review their work with them. When you are certain all the work has been completed, please sign and return the evidence checklist and the completed work. I collect center work on Mondays. Some tasks will be assessed and some will be checked off as completed.

Centers Continued You may help your child with the work, but I will be giving students a center quiz periodically to assess what they are learning. They are encouraged to ask for help from their peers or teachers during centers. At least one center a week is small group work with me. Students who receive services from Catapult are required to complete center work. If a student is having a difficult time completing the work, please contact me and I can reduce the work. All students are given extra time on Fridays to ask for help or complete work.

Frankfort Trip The trip will be sometime in late winter or spring. We will ask for parent volunteers to go. Because of a high demand we usually draw names to determine the parents who go. Students will begin learning about the branches of government in the fall and will be expected to remember the information the entire year and beyond. Use the website to play a fun game that will help the students study the branches of government.website
