10-2 NOTES: ENERGY TRANSFER PP 366-369
2
In an ecosystem energy flows: Sun autotrophs heterotrophs producers consumers
3
PRODUCERS/AUTOTROPHS Can make their own food through photosynthesis or chemosynthesis
4
PRODUCERS/AUTOTROPHS Productivity: energy made by producers (after biological processes) available to consumers
5
MEASURING PRODUCTIVITY Gross primary productivity (GPP): rate at which producers capture energy in organic compounds
6
MEASURING PRODUCTIVITY Net primary productivity (NPP): the rate at which biomass accumulates (after some is used) NPP= GPP – Cellular Respiration
7
Biomass: the amount of organic (living) material produced MEASURING PRODUCTIVITY
8
CONSUMERS Get energy by eating other organisms (5 types)
9
CONSUMERS Get energy by eating other organisms Herbivores: eat producers
10
CONSUMERS Herbivores: eat producers Carnivores: eat other consumers
11
CONSUMERS Herbivores: eat producers Carnivores: eat other consumers Omnivores: eat producers and consumers
12
CONSUMERS Detritivores: feed on “garbage” or dead organic matter (ex. Worms, vultures)
13
CONSUMERS Decomposer: break down dead organic matter into simpler molecules Recycle nutrients back into ecosystem!
14
CLASS WORK Consumer 4-Squares
