cyto- -cyte cyto- -cyte “cell” Words that begin with cyto-Definition Picture Sentence
2
Science Fact of the Day: Everyone's tongue print is different.
3
CO: I will identify and describe the phases of mitosis. I will evaluate the importance of the cell cycle for the growth of an organism. LO: I will write notes about Mitosis. I will model the phases of Mitosis with play-doh.
4
Think-Pair-Share How will a cell spend most of it’s life?
5
Cell Cycle Re-cap 1.G 0 2.G 1 3.S phase 4.G 2 5.M phase Remember that G 1, S, and G 2 together are known as interphase and a cell spends most of it’s life in interphase.
6
Think-Pair-Share Why are cells small? Why would it be bad for them to grow too large?
7
Reasons for cell division 1.To prevent them from being inefficient in getting nutrients – surface area to volume ratio 2.To reproduce – For example: bacteria can reproduce asexually 3.To repair damaged tissue – For example: if you get a paper cut 4.To grow an organism
8
Steps of Cell Division
9
Mitosis in the Cell
10
Mitosis: division of the nucleus *only occurs in BODY cells Cytokinesis: division of the cytoplasm
11
Interphase DNA is in the form of chromatin – Chromatin is DNA tightly coiled around proteins. It looks kind of like spaghetti
12
Mitosis Phases
13
Prophase: chromosomes (coiled DNA) are visible and the nuclear envelope is gone. DNA is in the form of chromosomes
14
Metaphase: the chromosomes line up across the center (middle) of the cell.
15
Anaphase: centromeres split and chromosomes move away into two groups near the poles of the cell So, each chromosome consists of two identical sister chromatids. Each pair of sister chromatids is attached at an area called the centromere.
16
Telophase: 2 new nuclei begin to form
17
Cytokinesis: division of the cytoplasm, occurs after Mitosis is complete

Let’s practice… On the back of your page, number 1-5. On the next slide, you will see 5 pictures. You need to figure out what phase each one is in and write it down.
