1 Remember… You have a vocab quiz!!! Study!

2 Colloquial Adjective This word describes language that is used in an easy, informal style. It is usually more appropriate in speech than formal writing. Colloquialisms appear often in literature since they provide a sense of actual conversation and use the pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary of everyday speech. “Y’all” is a colloquial term – it’s a colorful term, but you would more often speak it than use it in formal writing.

3 Poor Richard’s Almanack (1732-1758), was published by Benjamin Franklin under the pseudonym of “Poor Richard” or “Richard Saunders.” Franklin’s Alamanack was especially remembered for its aphorisms and proverbs on the value of hard work and sayings for success. DIRECTIONS: 1.Read through the proverbs in your packet. 2.Put a check next to the proverbs you think best match up with YOUR view of what/who an American is. Put a star next to your favorite. 3.Put a circle next to proverbs that match up with the idea of an American that we read in the essay yesterday. 4.Out of the proverbs that have circles/check marks/stars, pick ONE that you would like to perform a skit about. Remember, a skit will be a short “play” about a situation that illustrates this proverb, like my example of “honesty is the best policy.”

4 Work with the people at your table. Each group will pick ONE proverb to create a skit about. You will have 5 minutes to prepare the skit. Be ready to explain quickly (in about 30 seconds) how your proverb and skit fit into your idea/de Crevecoeur’s idea of what an American is. You will perform for the rest of the class. I’ll be walking around to give you participation points.
