2. History Used to be a fortress back in 1190 made for the king to protect the capital from the Anglo Norman threat. The Louvre ceased to be the main royal residence in 1682. In 1692 the building was occupied by the Academie des inscrptions et Belles Lettres and the Academie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture. During the French Revolution, the national assembly declared that the Louvre shall be used as a museum to hold all the history that it has been through and display the masterpieces.
