7. The Separatists, later known as the Pilgrims, left England under the leadership of William Bradford to start a settlement where they could worship as they pleased. Why do you think King Henry VIII insisted that everyone in England belong to the Church of England? 8. The Pilgrims landed at Plymouth with a plan of government, the Mayflower Compact, already written. They suffered great hardships during their first winter, including freezing weather, hunger and disease. The Mayflower Compact said that the Pilgrim’s government would create fair laws for the good of everyone at Plymouth. Click on the ship to tour the Mayflower or take its voyage. Trivia: The Mayflower was most often used as a cargo ship and typically made runs between England and France (among other counties in Europe). It was designed to transport goods, not people.

9. After surviving their first harsh winter, the Pilgrims were aided in their efforts by making contact with the native people. QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION: What English-speaking Native American first made contact with the Pilgrims? What other English-speaking Native American helped the Pilgrims make a peace treaty with the Wampanoag? How did the Wampanoag help the Pilgrims survive? How was the first Thanksgiving alike and different from our modern Thanksgiving celebrations?

10. The Puritans left England in 1630 and established the Massachusetts Bay Colony in North America. Their leader, John Winthrop, said that the Puritans “shall be as a City upon a hill, the eyes of all people are on us.” What did he mean by this? The Massachusetts Bay Colony grew rapidly due to a booming economy based on fishing, shipbuilding, and fur trading. The largest city in the English colonies for the next 100 years was here. Name it.
