16 C HECKING FOR UNDERSTANDING Why do you think Ponyboy and Cherry are able to talk to one another? What discoveries do they make about one another? Why does Pony feel that life is unfair? (ex. the greasers’ lifestyle as opposed to the Socs lifestyle) What connection does Ponyboy make to Johnny, Bob’s rings, and the blue Mustang on pg. 44? How do you think Ponyboy feels after Cherry tells him, “…if I see you in the hall at school or someplace and don’t say hi, well it’s not personal or anything…” Discuss Johnny’s quote on pg. 48 – “It seems there’s gotta be someplace without greasers or Socs, with just people. Plain ordinary people.” What happens between Darry and Pony at the end of Chapter Three?
