Access Prior Knowledge Lesson 1: What are chemical changes? Opening Activity Open Science textbook to page 374. Open Science folder to review vocabulary words and outline for the chapter. Open Science journal and answer the following questions: 1- What are atoms? 2- How are density and buoyancy related? Review Content Cards and Q-Cards in bin, sharing with partners quizzing each other quietly. Log in to clickers using student ID number. Be ready to review home learning when timer goes off. Don't forget to write your home learning in your agenda page 120A.

Do you agree with the statement? Physical changes can change the chemical properties of a substance. YES NO

Do you agree with the statement? When iron rusts, a chemical change has occurred. YES NO

Do you agree with the statement? It is always obvious when a substance undergoes a chemical change. YES NO

Do you agree with the statement? The formation of chemical bonds requires a change in energy. YES NO

Physical & Chemical Changes Physical changes occur when matter keeps its identity. Examples of physical change include position, size, shape, volume and phase of matter. Chemical changes occur when matter changes into another completely different kind of matter with different properties.

Evidence of Chemical Change You can observe that chemical change took place by a change in color, formation of gas or a solid. Antacid tablets dropped in water give off a fizz which is carbon dioxide gas. Iron becomes rust when it is combines water with oxygen. This happens because atoms rearrange themselves to form different kind of matter. EVIDENCE: Second paragraph Page 376

Chemical Changes & Energy Changes During chemical changes, bonds between atoms either break or form new bonds giving off or taking in energy. In combustion, which is the process of burning, energy is given off as light and heat. Energy can be given off in other forms like electrical energy in a battery or solar panel. BRAIN POP: Property Changes

TextQuest Answer in your Science Journal 1. What is the difference between a physical and chemical change? 2. How does rust form and what type of change is it? 3. Give some examples of a chemical change? 4. Give some examples of combustion. Don't forget to write your home learning in your agenda page 120A.
