MAGNETS UNIT REVIEW

Standard We will learn and understand that magnetism can be observed when there is an interaction between the magnetic fields of magnets or between a magnet and materials made of iron.

WHAT IS A MAGNET? A magnet is a material or object that produces a magnetic field that is responsible for the force that pulls other materials such as iron, and attracts or repels other magnets.

WHAT IS A MAGNETIC FIELD? The region around a magnetic material or a moving electric charge within the force of magnetism acts.

WHAT IS MAGNETISM? The property of attracting certain metals; the attracting property of a magnet

WHAT IS IRON? A strong, hard magnetic silvery- gray metal, much used as a material for construction especially in the form of steel.

TYPES OF MAGNETS BAR RING COW WAND HORSESHOE NEODYMIUM

DEFINITIONS Attract draw objects together Repel resist or keep something away

HOW DOES THE MAGNETS Attract Repel North to South South to North North to North South to South

STACKING RING MAGNETS WHAT HAPPENS? When you Flip Them When you Flip Them

MAGNET INFORMATION A permanent magnet is - unchanging An electromagnet is - a temporary magnet Temporary means - Lasting for a limited time

MAKING AN ELECTROMAGNET An electromagnet is formed - when electric current flows through a conductor. Most electromagnets consists of - a wire wound around an iron core.

NAME MAGNETS WE USE Refrigerator Magnets, Toys & Jewelry Vinyl Records, VHS Tapes & Cassette Tapes Credit, Debit ATM Cards Televisions & Microwaves Computer Monitors & Speakers Electric Motors & Generators Compasses & Magnetic Levitation Transport Junk Yard Machinery

CLASS DISCUSSION Does a magnet have to touch something to make it move? NO Why does something move? The magnet has a magnetic field Is a magnetic field permanent? YES

CLASS DISCUSSION Can we see a magnetic field? NO – it is invisible Do all magnets have the same magnetic field? NO Does the Earth have a magnetic field? YES

MAGNETIC FIELD What are the Earth’s magnetic poles. magnetic North Pole magnetic South Pole. What happens when a magnet is hung from the ceiling? The magnet turns to point North.

MAGNETIC FIELD What happens when a compass is moved around a magnet? The compass needle turns to face the magnet.

MAGNETIC FIELD What happens when a compass is moved around a room? The compass needle turns to face the Earth’s magnetic North Pole.

Compare & Contrast Small Magnetic Field Affects at close distances Can override Earth’s Magnetic field Both Magnetic Direct a compass needle Earth’s Magnetic Field Affects at great distances Always pulls a compass needle North

We learned that magnetism can be observed when there is an interaction between the magnetic fields of magnets or between a magnet and materials made of iron. Review of Learning STANDARD
