Vocabulary 1. Cite — Pulling information directly out of a text; to “quote” 2. Textual- From the text 3. Evidence - Support for your answer, opinion, or idea 4. Textual Evidence- Information from the text to support your answer 5. Analyze — To break apart and study (a text, a photograph, a poem, etc.) 6. Explicit — stated clearly and in detail; leaving no room for doubt 7. Inference — A reasonable guess based on textual evidence and what you know from your own experiences

Be a detective and PROVE IT! According to the text… On page ___, it said… In paragraph ___, the writer stated… In the text it said… I can infer/predict from the section… The author wrote… For example… For instance… From the reading, I know… I know ______________________ because… Based on what I read… This provides proof by… Within the reading, I found… The illustration shows… The fact box/caption/heading said… * Remember, if you use the EXACT words from the selection, then you must use “Quotation Marks.”
