Right at Issue Oregon stating that physician assisted suicide is legal. John Ashcroft the Attorney General of Oregon stated this was illegal because of the Controlled Substances Act of 1970 (CSA).

Supreme Court Decision Ruled in favor of Oregon 6-3 saying the CSA was intended to prevent doctors from engaging in illicit drug dealings not determining standard medical practice.

Effects of the Decision This case determined that the states regulate physician assisted suicide and standard medical practice not the federal government.
