8 Failures of the AOC The Articles of Confederation was the United States first form of government. It was almost a complete failure which forced the fledgling nation to create the Constitution in response to this failure. 10 Remember the failures…  Congress could not… o …collect taxes o …regulate commerce (no power to control business and trade) o …call the state militias into service o …enforce treaties  Other problems o Amendment (changes) to the document required unanimous (100%) vote of the states o Every state, despite size, had one vote o States could choose to nullify (make invalid, not accept) Congress’s laws o Contained no executive branch (President) to enforce Congress’s laws

11 Supporting Opinion State your opinion clearly ◦ The reader should not have to guess what your opinion is Support your opinion with facts, not more opinions ◦ The more concrete information you use, the stronger your opinion becomes Provide direct examples

12 First Amendment Rights The First Amendment of the Constitution protects many freedoms including freedom of speech, press, religion, petition, and assembly. Do you feel that there should be any limits on these rights? Explain yourself completely. ◦ Steps to answer this question: 1.Pick two of these rights and explain what limits should be applied to them. Why?
