WHOLE SCHOOL LITERACY YOUR PERSONAL JOURNALS!
2
LAST WEEK, YOU THOUGHT ABOUT THIS YOUNG LADY: Who is she? What did she do? Why is it important?
3
“I hope I will be able to confide everything to you, as I have never been able to confide in anyone, and I hope you will be a great source of comfort and support.”
4
OUR PLAN: As students at Carmel College, this is an exciting and important time of your life! What better way to record it than documenting your thoughts, feelings, hopes and dreams in the form of a journal? Therefore, every week (starting today), you will be given 20 minutes during Registration to reflect on your life and ponder your future… At the end of your time at Carmel, you will get to take your journal home! How many years of your life will you have recorded?
5
YOUR JOURNAL! Write on your front page: Name Reflective Journal Form Tutor Room Number
6
THE RULES: 1.This diary is about you, therefore there shouldn’t be any personal information about other people in there (other than referencing people by name). 2.Although the journals will not be marked, your form tutor may read it every now and again so make sure there is absolutely no offensive language or inappropriate ideas. 3.If you write anything in your diary (or know of something in a friend’s) that you think a teacher should know about, please make a member of staff aware. Glue these rules on the inside of the cover!
7
SO, HOW ARE YOU GOING TO DO THIS? Firstly, you need to reflect! This means looking back over your actions from the last week. Is there anything you are proud of? Is there anything you are ashamed of? Did anything happen which stood out? Why? Decide what you would like to write about!
8
HOW DO I WRITE ABOUT IT? Journals are usually written in the past tense and first person. Why? You may wish to start with a time connective e.g. ‘yesterday’, ‘last night’, last week’, etc. Use TiPToP paragraphs and connectives to organise your work. New TIME New PLACE New TOPIC New PERSON

A STUDENT’S EXAMPLE: I’m not in a very good mood today because I fell out with my sister last night. She always manages to ruin stuff. When we got in from school yesterday she was using the iPad that we’re supposed to share but was messing around on it. She downloaded a dodgy app and it got a virus! I was fuming because it’s broken now! She was crying and I should have been nice to her and got mum but I shouted at her for breaking it. Mum said next time I’ve got to be nicer to her if it’s an accident, so I’m going to try and comfort her when she cries instead of calling her names.

NOW IT’S TIME FOR YOU TO WRITE YOUR FIRST ENTRY! Date (e.g. 1 st February 2016)
