Office of the University Registrar SACRAO 2016 What’s the big deal anyway? Charge to investigate implementing preferred names and pronouns came from a vote of the Unified Student Government, with support from the Office of Gender & Sexual Diversity, and the President. Primarily a response to better serve our international and transgender students, and also in an effort to create a more inclusive campus. Not restricted, and can be used by any student. Not yet implemented for Faculty & Staff due to differing regulatory issues, but is being explored by WFMO.

Office of the University Registrar SACRAO 2016 What is a Preferred Name? A preferred name is any first name a student uses to identify themselves in day-to-day life. Preferred names can be nicknames, alternate first names, or a combination. Only a preferred first name may be entered. Surnames must remain the legal name unless a legal name change is obtained. Not restricted, and can be used by any student. Not yet implemented for Faculty & Staff due to differing regulatory issues, but is being explored by WFMO. Preferred name changes are allowed as long as they are sincere and not a deliberate attempt at misrepresentation. Questionable cases are referred to Student Affairs.

Office of the University Registrar SACRAO 2016 What is a Preferred Pronoun? A preferred pronoun is the pronoun used to best reflect one’s gender identity. Preferred pronoun is not required if a preferred name is entered. While many organizations have attempted to develop gender-neutral pronouns such as ‘Ze’, because no standard has yet emerged Tulane decided not to use them at this time. Available preferred pronouns at Tulane are ‘He’, ‘She’, ‘They’, or ‘Preferred First Name Only’.

Office of the University Registrar SACRAO 2016 How does it work?

Office of the University Registrar SACRAO 2016 Implementation Initial letter from President to Faculty & Staff Required sensitivity training for all student orientated staff Optional sensitivity training for faculty E-mail notification to students upon activation of link

Office of the University Registrar SACRAO 2016 Potential Pitfalls Must have buy-in (forced or otherwise) from administration, faculty, and staff. Preferred names and pronouns are only as good as their use. Sensitivity training is KEY. In today’s world of helicopter parents, care must be taken not to ‘out’ students accidentally. It remains impossible to please everyone. Communication and well written rules, regulations, and FAQ’s are a must.
