7 Grading = Old School  A = 90 - 100 points  B = 80 - 89 points  C = 70 - 79 points Are you allowed to make lower than a “C” I don’t like giving grades to graduate students  A = 90 - 100 points  B = 80 - 89 points  C = 70 - 79 points Are you allowed to make lower than a “C” I don’t like giving grades to graduate students

9 Digitization Projects = 50%  We will have two weeks of practical instruction before projects are due [schedule]  I will [try to] give you time during class to work on projects  Projects should take about two hours to complete  There will be a SHORT [500 words] essay accompanying each digitization project  I will provide grading rubrics, and instructions. You will know what is expected of you  We will have two weeks of practical instruction before projects are due [schedule]  I will [try to] give you time during class to work on projects  Projects should take about two hours to complete  There will be a SHORT [500 words] essay accompanying each digitization project  I will provide grading rubrics, and instructions. 10 IP Essay = 10%  Three objects, decide whether they should be digitized  Assignment is on the website already [grading page]  I will provide more information when we get closer to the assignment  Context is important, for example  Three objects, decide whether they should be digitized  Assignment is on the website already [grading page]  I will provide more information when we get closer to the assignment  Context is important, for example

11 Participation = 40%  Discussion = 2 pts/class  Doesn’t seem like much, but it adds up  I will post discussion questions related to the readings on the class listserv on the Monday before class. (That means there will be questions posted Monday 4th for Friday 8th class)  Be prepared for a discussion of the issues introduced in the readings.  Discussion = 2 pts/class  Doesn’t seem like much, but it adds up  I will post discussion questions related to the readings on the class listserv on the Monday before class. 12 Participation = 40%  Blogging = 2 pts/blog entry  If you’re not going to get an “A” in this class, it will be because of this. If you don’t do 5 blog entries, you’ve automatically gone down to a “B,” for example  Easy and fun way to make 24 of the possible 100 points in this class  JUST. DO. IT.  Lists of websites on [Resources] page  Blogging = 2 pts/blog entry  If you’re not going to get an “A” in this class, it will be because of this. 13 What does “Participation” Mean, Anyway?  Not cut and dried  Some people are shy [not everyone, though]  I’m cheerful and open to differing views. I try to make it easy to talk.  Looking for engagement, eye contact, statement of opinions and interest in the issues.  You don’t need to be an expert, just an informed participant.  Not cut and dried  Some people are shy [not everyone, though]  I’m cheerful and open to differing views. 14 How to show up to class and still not get credit for participation  Reading the paper  Falling asleep  Seriously. Just don’t show up. It brings me down.  Reading the paper  Falling asleep  Seriously. Just don’t show up. It brings me down.

15 Blogging  Class blog = http://xxx.blogspot.com/  You will be receiving an “invitation” from blogger. Accept it.  Give yourself a nickname if you’re concerned with privacy  That said, the blog will not be public, and I will not link to it from anywhere. Virtually invisible.  “Blog This!”  Class blog = http://xxx.blogspot.com/  You will be receiving an “invitation” from blogger. 16 Blogging (continued)  Find a digitization project, review it  Blog entry should contain three paragraphs  Collection Principles  Object Characteristics  Metadata  Based on A Framework of Guidance for Building Good Digital Collections, completely reviewed at http://courses.ischool.utexas.edu/megan/2006/Fall/INF385R/blog_objectives.php http://courses.ischool.utexas.edu/megan/2006/Fall/INF385R/blog_objectives.php  Should take about 30 minutes to do  Find a digitization project, review it  Blog entry should contain three paragraphs  Collection Principles  Object Characteristics  Metadata  Based on A Framework of Guidance for Building Good Digital Collections, completely reviewed at http://courses.ischool.utexas.edu/megan/2006/Fall/INF385R/blog_objectives.php http://courses.ischool.utexas.edu/megan/2006/Fall/INF385R/blog_objectives.php  Should take about 30 minutes to do
