Lesson 1 Roanoke and Jamestown

Roanoke Island First attempt to establish a __________ 1584, Queen Elizabeth gave Sir Walter Raleigh the right to claim land in North America. Sir Walter Raleigh sent people to find a good location to set up a colony. They found an island off of Virginia

Arrived in 1587, disappeared in 1590 Unknown for sure what happened to the colony of Roanoke. There was the possibility of disease, capture, or dispersing throughout America

The first group was sent in 1585 to observe the Native American homes Observed that the Native American settlements only had 30 homes max in each area. This first settlement did not survive. The winter was too rough and the settlers went back to England.

A second group was sent in 1587 with about 90 men, 17 women, and 9 children who were led by a man of the name __________ _________. John’s daughter gave birth to the first English born child in Native America, Virginia ________. John White had returned to England to get supplies and did not return for ___ ________due to England and Spain being at war with each other. When he returned, all he found was one set of bones, the word “Croatoan” on the gate, and the word “Cro” carved into one of the nearby trees.

Documented what he saw with sketches

Possibility that they went to live with the Croatoan Indians. Supplies never arrived by John White, therefore, they either died or dispersed throughout among the Natives.

Failure at Roanoke discouraged English to want to come back to North America. New King: King James I Many wanted him to grant _________, or a document that would allow one the right to form a colony.

Joint-stock company (investors bought shares) Investors would buy shares in hopes that they would profit off of the possible colony formed. People investing would supply the money needed for a colony. King James then granted the Virginia Company a charter. What is a charter?

Their main plan was to find profitable materials like gold/silver to repay all the investors. This did not happen Instead disease/hunger struck the settlers of early Jamestown. This lead to people no longer investing, less supplies

John smith encouraged the settlers to work hard Also befriended the Powhatan people along with their Chief Powhatan, who helped with food. Smith got injured and had to return to England With Smith gone, the Powhatan stopped helping with food and warfare broke out between the Natives and the colonist This time period between 1609-1610 was known as the “___________ time”

New settlers were sent to Jamestown to replace those who died. Relations improved with the Powhatan once again by the settler John Rolfe marring the Chief’s daughter, Pocahontas. John Rolfe also had the idea to grow tobacco to help bring up profit in the colony.

If English wanted to settle in Jamestown, they were given a headright, or a land grant of 50 acres if they would pay their own way. This made more people want to come to North America for land and possible work/riches

The idea of being able to form one’s own government also drew people to want to settle in Jamestown. Jamestown had burgesses or representatives who made laws for the colony. The House of Burgess was the first legislature in North America.

King James took a way the charter due to lack of ________ and war with the Powhatans that caused many deaths in the colony. Became a royal colony, directly under the control of the English government

Who was Sir Walter Raleigh? How was Raleigh significant to American history? What were some of the hardships for the Jamestown settlers?
