2 Type of Essays Narrative Descriptive Expository Argumentative/Persuasive

3 Narrative Tells a story or recounts events that make a point Usually uses chronological order Employs dialogue Tells who, what, when, where, why Employs action verbs and specific details –My first day of college made me feel like a six-year old again.

4 Description Uses sensory details (sight, sound, smell, taste, feel) to paint a word picture Uses spatial order, but can use the others Uses specific details –My Himalayan cat is definitely an odd- looking creature.

5 Expository—to give information Illustration Process Definition Classification/Division Comparison/Contrast/Analogy Cause/Effect Enumeration

6 Illustration Uses examples, illustrations, or cases to prove a point –My cousin Jane is the messiest housekeeper I know.

7 Process Explains how to do something, make something, or how something works –The SQ3R method is a valuable study technique for students who want to save time and get good grades.

8 Definition Attempts to explain what a concept or term is by defining it and then extending that definition with further support –Depression is actually a disease caused by chemical imbalances in the brain.

9 Classification/Division Breaks a group or class down into sub-groups or types based on a principle of division and then explains how the types are different. –Musical instruments can be divided into four groups based on how they produce sound.

10 Comparison/Contrast /Analogy Looks at how two things in the same class are alike or different –Many students have difficulty adjusting to the differences between high school and college. Looks at how two things in different classes are similar –A camera operates on many of the same principles as the eye.

11 Cause/Effect Attempts to analyze a situation or event in terms of –Why it happened –What happened as a result Many people think that the issue of slavery was the cause of the Civil War, but many other factors were involved.

12 Enumeration A list of information or items, sometimes in chronological order, sometimes not. –Social networks perform several important functions Influence preferences Provide primary source of information/advice Provide companionship

13 Argument Attempts to present one side of a question of judgment Uses emotional and ethical appeals Uses facts, expert opinion, personal experience Uses logic and reason –On-line registration at RCC should not be available to certain groups of students.

14 Mixed Patterns Many genres employ the use of more than one rhetorical form. The form(s) chosen depend on the topic, purpose, and audience.

15 Ordering Details Regardless of the type of rhetorical form used, the details in the body can be organized in three ways. Chronological—time sequence Spatial—orders details in space Least to Most Important
