UNIT 6: W.W.I Lesson 6 Propaganda

What I need to know The role that nationalism had in the unification of Germany and Italy as well as its role in dividing Austria-Hungary. The impact that the shared culture of national groups and industrial classes had on changing society and politics in Europe

Objectives Propaganda was used to influence the actions of society throughout nations during World War I

Guiding Questions How did propaganda motivate citizens on both sides to pledge their support to the war effort?

What is it? It’s a means of persuading people to change their ideas and believe a particular way Similar to a commercial or an advertisement People use pictures, movies, or songs During W.W.I, the used posters Meant to get people to think, feel, and act

Tools that are used Slogans (catchy phrase) Humor Caricatures Emotion (either with words or an image) Symbols

Modern Example Who is this appealing to? Young boys What tools are being used? Catchy phrase Pride (faster than a wild animal) Color Celebrity Objective? Buy the shoes

Why were they used? 1. For recruits: to get men to serve so they could replenish the lines 2. Supplies: They needed people to not use many supplies at home so more could be sent to the military 3. Money: they needed people to buy war bonds( loans for the government) so the government could spend more money 4. They needed to create a sense of Nationalism

Role of Nationalism Pride in your country Need for recruits Low supplies

Based on fear The goal was to create an ethnocentric society Fear of the “other kind” as a means to promote nationalism Portrays the central powers are an evil menace Spreads an idea of hatred

Types of posters There were two main types: 1. Positive -used to encourage the people. Everything is going well and we are winning! -Your contributions are working! Keep helping -catchy slogan -emotional appeal 2. Negative -Look at the horrible central powers! They are trying to hurt us! Fear based -If you don’t do this the men will die -The enemy is drawn to look like a monster -Name calling with half truths or lies
