Networks Connectivity

Objective Learn the meaning and significance of bandwidth Understand what is meant by buffering

Connecting the world

Visit this website www.submarinecablemap.com/ Activity 1 : - There are a number of countries which only have 1 cable connecting them to the remainder of the world. Create a Word Document and take some screen shots of these. Activity 2: - What do you think would happen if they lost their internet connection Activity 3: - Some countries have multiple connections, what would happen if one of their connections broke? Explain

Bandwidth If you completed the third activity on the last sheet, you may have noted that the speed of the internet would decrease… Bandwidth is the amount of data that can be carried at a time. Watch this video: - https://vimeo.com/145842221 https://vimeo.com/145842221

Bandwidth Activity: Using the shape tools in Word, can you create a diagram which explains bandwidth. You can be as creative as you like: One student once showed us how many zombies he could fit through tubes….

Connection Speeds In order to check our connection speed we must run regular speed checks. This can be done at www.speedtest.net It is measured in Mbps. You will notice that we have a smaller upload speed.

How do we transmit data? There are a number of devices we need in order to connect to the internet. In groups, can you make a list of possible devices that we might need? Discuss

How do we transmit data? A computer Telephone line Modem / Router Wifi card Bluetooth

Activity: - Can you research why we’re likely to need some of these devices and explain in your own words A computer Telephone line Modem / Router Wifi card Bluetooth

Issues with WiFi Must be close to the WiFi hotspot Slower than wired Interference can come from walls Risk of security

Strengths Of Wifi No need to be physically connected Can connect to mobile device

Buffering Source: - http://www.bbc.co.uk/education/guides/zp9jpv4/revision/8

Activity Start producing a blog post, video or poster depending on what your teacher requested. Make sure to use the keywords below Make sure that you include information from the tasks you’ve already produced and make sure that you show all of your objectives have been met. Keywords to use: Bandwidth, buffering, hardware, devices, WiFi, Connection
