Warm up Using your blue notes from yesterday, define the coriolis effect. Which way to currents move in the northern hemisphere? In the southern hemisphere? How is earth’s rotation related to these things?
2
Announcements and Agenda Agenda – Warm up – Balloon Demo – Coriolis effect – Quiz Review – Quiz – Work on missing work/extra credit/crossword Announcements – Have a safe and wonderful break!
3
Coriolis effect balloon demo 1. Blow up a balloon and tie it off. Draw an “equator” around the center of the balloon 2. Have a classmate slowly rotate the balloon to the right. Draw a line straight down from the top of the balloon to the center as the balloon rotates. 3. Now draw a line from the bottom of the balloon straight up to the center as the balloon rotates. AUTOMATIC DETENTION FOR HORSEPLAY WITH BALLOON
4
WHAT DO YOU THINK? 1. How did the rotation affect the lines that you drew? 2. How does this activity demonstrate the Coriolis effect?
5
Quiz Review What is salinity?
6
The amount of dissolved salts in ocean water
7
Which has a higher density: cold water or warm water?
8
cold
9
Which has a higher density: water with high salinity or water with low salinity?
10
Low salinity
11
Does evaporation INCREASE or DECREASE salinity of ocean water?
12
INCREASE!
13
Why is seawater more dense than freshwater?
14
Higher salinity in seawater
15
Which direction to density (deep) currents typically move?
16
North to South (aka down because of differences in density!!)
17
Can windstorms cause surface currents, density currents, or both?
18
Surface!
19
What is upwelling?
20
Cold water rises to the surface (and brings nutrients with it! )
21
Why do fish love areas of upwelling in the ocean?
22
Upwelling brings up nutrients!
23
Is the coriolis effect caused by changes in density, earth’s rotation, salinity, or temperature?
24
rotation
25
What type of current is formed by wind blowing along the coast?
26
Surface currents? What is the difference between surface and density currents?
27
Unlike density currents, surface currents move in which direction?
28
horizontally
29
Do surface currents affect climate based on where they originate or where the end up?
30
originate
31
What is the major difference between surface and density currents?
32
Surface currents = caused by wind patterns Deep/density currents = caused by differences in density
33
Explain the relationship between salinity and density?
34
Saltier water is more dense, more likely to sink, and causes ocean currents
35
QUIZ! Good luck! When finished – Work on missing work – Work on brainpop extra credit quiz or oceans reading guide for extra cedit
