Fusion Technology Summary Report Jean Paul Allain IEEE-NPSS AdCom Meeting 2 March, 2013, Savannah, Georgia

Recent Committee Activities Currently organizing first FTC 2013 teleconference to discuss Fusion Technology Awards and progress on SOFE 25 and SOFE 26 meetings. Tina Dodson collected nominations for the FTA and these have been circulated with committee members for ranking and final selection by March 1 to be discussed in our March conference call. SOFE 26 (2015) co-organized with PPC (Pulsed Power Conference) chaired by Mark Crawford. In process of finalizing MOU SOFE 26 organizing committee being assembled this spring

Progress report on SOFE 25 San Francisco, CA, June 10-14, 2013 The technical program will be anchored by 10 plenary and 48 invited papers from leaders in fusion physics and engineering from the world community. The conference will have a strongly international character and an emphasis on next-step programs and facilities on the roadmap to the realization of fusion. Abstract submission closed on February 1, and we received a total of 360 abstracts. Near 60 contributions of the submitted abstracts were in the fusion PMI area. The SOFE short course will focus on Plasma-Material Interactions and currently J.P. Allain (course organizer) is finalizing instructor list.

Author notification for submitted abstracts is expected around March 1. Based on the number of abstracts, we now anticipate approximately 300 attendees. This is up significantly from SOFE 2011 (~230) and our budget planning number of 200. We increased the hotel block by 20%, the maximum allowed by our contract, but still expect to run out of rooms at the conference rate. Sponsorship fundraising is underway, but thus far has been less successful than 2011. We have also been soliciting exhibitors, but again the response has been low. This may be due to the fact that SOFE 2013 is a stand-alone meeting unlike many of the previous SOFE/ICOPS meetings. We are still projecting a budget surplus around the desired 15%. Progress report on SOFE 25 San Francisco, CA, June 10-14, 2013

Near term key dates include the deadline for non-US citizens to register for the NIF tour (March 15), author registration deadline (April 1), and paper submission opening (April 15). PPPL is taking the lead on making sure that SOFE is approved by DOE for government employee participation. The possible restriction on government travel, including the hopefully remote possibility that all travel will be suspended in the event of a sequestration, is adding uncertainty.
