Making your own web site How to use Publisher to do it!

Planning Your Website  Create ONE folder for all portfolio materials!!!!!! Name it “ Senior Portfolio.” You should have this folder saved in multiple places at ALL TIMES!  Within that folder, make 3 smaller folders: essays, media, website  Keep an ongoing collection of items for use in your portfolio  Know where you are “going” with your pages  Be familiar with the requirements of your assignment

Your website outline:  You will have 9 pages in your website:  Home Page  Metaphor Poem  Dear Reader  9 th Grade  10 th Grade  11 th Grade  12 th Grade  Academic Resume**  Values Statement  **Other types of technical writing will be options

Creating a home page:  Open Publisher  Choose a website template or design your own (choose “Blank”)  Avoid using the “Wizard” to fill in “company information”  Sometimes it opens “Wizard”; sometimes it does not

Adding pages:  Add any page type that you would like (Insert pages)  Calendar, events, etc.  Insert…Page…  Duplicate Page  Pages are automatically hyperlinked to the buttons on the home page if you choose “Add hyperlink” when creating a new page  Be sure that you have hyperlinks on the side and the bottom of EACH page  All pages must be hyperlinked to all other pages

Hyperlinking text:  Highlight the text you want to hyperlink  Right click on the text  Choose hyperlink  In the dialogue box, choose the appropriate page number for your link’s destination  If you want to link to a page not contained in your website, you need to select an internet address to type in the box  The internet address must appear just as it appears on the original website (Copy and Paste).  Check “Webpage Preview” frequently while you work; sometimes pages appear slightly different, and you want to make sure everything is working from that viewpoint.

Adding Images:  Find images that you want to use and save them in your “Media” folder- think about copyright laws!  Choose insert…picture….from file….and select the file that contains your picture  Pictures can be manipulated and moved around anywhere you would like to place them on the page by grabbing the handles and adjusting the size or clicking on the picture and dragging it to the appropriate place- better to size using formatting than by pulling it from the edges (less blurry)  No Clip Art!

Thinking about sound:  When choosing a musical selection or sound that you would like to include, keep in mind:  Sound files are large; don’t waste too much space on the sound clips… be selective. .mp3’s are a more efficient use of space than.wav’s  Only use music that relates to your metaphor! (This rule does not apply to your homepage-)  Don’t loop music! Have the song(s) play once…you’ll be given that option.  Think about copyright laws! Best to use music you own…save to your flashdrive and bring to school. Please use headphones while manipulating sounds.  To insert sounds, select “Format,” then “Background,” then “Background Sound,” then Browse for what you’ve saved. Don’t forget to check afterwards in webpage preview!

To Add Sounds:  Choose Format…Choose Background  Choose Background Sound  Browse for the sound or clip you want to use  Choose the appropriate actions for the sound (loop, timing, etc.)

To Add Video:  Keep in mind that videos must be school appropriate and must follow copyright laws!  Choose “Insert,” then “HTML Code Fragment,” then copy and paste the code into the box.  Check webpage preview!

Your homepage requirements:  Welcome the reader to your portfolio  Introduce yourself and your plans for next school year  Include at least two photos- can be of yourself alone, with friends, family, etc… You can also use pictures that represent yourself and/or your interests  Include a section where you discuss who you are, what your interests are, etc..  Include a section that introduces your metaphor to your reader…what your metaphor is, why you chose this metaphor, etc…  Make this page a creative representation of yourself…it should not be a series of paragraphs…use text boxes, word art, etc…to make it fun and inviting!

To view your page…  To see it as a web page  Choose File…web page preview  This allows you to navigate in the browser window  Your page(s) will be altered a bit in web page preview, so use it often! This is the view your audience (and assessor!) will have.

Reminders:  Watch your rulers at the top and side. Keep your titles at the same point on each page…DON’T GO BEYOND THE 960 MARK WITH TEXT!  Make sure your font is readable….always use text boxes.  Make everything relate to your metaphor…pictures, colors, music, etc…  Keep a running References page!

SAVING  On a daily basis, save the website as a Publisher document. (Be careful if you want to work on computers with different versions. You can do this by changing the “File Type” when you “Save As.”)  Your website should be saved as “Last name___portfolio”.  The very last time you save your website (once in March and once in May), before you send it to your CD, save it as a “Single File Webpage” (the tag will change to a.mht). You can’t change the site after saving it this way, so in March, be sure to keep a final Publisher copy also so it can be edited for May’s due date.

Due as part of your shell:  Your completed homepage with all the aforementioned requirements  All required pages for the website should be complete with everything you want to include EXCEPT the actual pieces of writing  The one exception is your metaphor poem- that piece must be included.  You must have paragraphs on each grade- level page that discuss your year as a whole (be specific…the good, the bad, and the ugly!) and how you related to your metaphor during this year of your life.

ANY QUESTIONS????

Good Luck!!
