1. Engineering Design Central Concepts: Engineering design involves practical problem solving, research, development, and invention/innovation, and requires designing, drawing, building, testing, and redesigning. Students should demonstrate the ability to use the engineering design process to solve a problem or meet a challenge. Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006

1.1Identify and explain the steps of the engineering design process: identify the problem, research the problem, develop possible solutions, select the best possible solution(s), construct prototypes and/or models, test and evaluate, communicate the solutions, and redesign. Identify the problem Research the problem Develop solutions Select the best solution Construct a prototype Test and evaluate Communicate the solutions Redesign Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006

Step 1 Identify the problem Write down the original problem here. Student - Design, build and program a robot to: Design a big robot to fight and either disable or push the other robot out of the ring What constraints have been placed on your team? (Deadlines, resources etc.) Control with your cellphone. Droid only. Get a video and upload it to your youtube account. Finish power point and put it on your weebly. Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006

Step 2 Research the problem Explore other options via the internet Student: List the internet sites that were helpful. Site 1http://mrcrokesrobotics.weebly.com/sumo-bot.html Site 2http://dotrobotics.weebly.com/ Site 3http://www.youtube.com/ What did you learn from your research? A How to make a fighting robot B Use gears to make robot powerful C Create a balance between speed and torque Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006

Step 3 Develop solutions BRAINSTORM COLLABORATION Student : Share your ideas with your design team. List your ideas below. 1.Need to create a powerful robot 2. Create a robotic arm to pick up or destroy the other robot 3. Make a long arm to be able to push the opponent out of The circle

Step 4 Select the best Possible solution(s) Student: Describe which solution(s) best meet the need or solve the problem. Describe exactly what idea or mixture of ideas your design team decided on for the first robot prototype? Use the next slide for your response. We need to create the balance between speed and torque with the gears and make sure that the torque is not too low that we could easily be pushed out but also not to slow so we could not be caught easily. Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006

The Somerset Berkley writing rubric will be used for assessment. Student : Skillfully and imaginatively describe what your first prototype will look like. We need to create a robot that has the perfect balance of speed but also a lot of torque. The gear ratio will be 3:1. We need the balance to be perfect so that the robot will be able to move faster than the other opponents but also be able to destroy them when the opportunity presents its self. We will have a front plow to make it easier for our robot to push the opponent out of the ring. We would also need to make sure that our robot is sturdy so that is not easy for the others to push us out of the ring or flip us over.

Step 5 Construct a prototype Build a robot with your NXT lego kit Create a computer program for your robot. Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006 Use the next slide(s) for the digital pictures of your prototypes and computer programs.

1st Prototype picture and computer program Step 5 evidence

Step 6 Test and Evaluate the solution(s) 1.Does your robot work? yes 2.Did it perform as expected? yes 3.What changes are necessary for the robot and the program? More power 4.Does it meet the original design constraints? Yes 5.Is it safe? Of course 6.Lab work- Modify your robot project and use the next slide to post a picture of your improved robot project. Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006

1 st modified prototype picture and computer program No computer program, used phone. Step 6 evidence

Step 7 Communicate the solution(s) Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006 Provide the YouTube link of your video that shows how your robot meets the challenge. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fBVWcoR-TLg

Redesign Overhaul the solution(s) based on information gathered during testing and self-assessment activity Learned how to make a powerful robot and flip the other opponent over Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006

Demonstrate the ability to use technology for research, critical thinking, problem solving, decision making, communication, collaboration, creativity, and innovation.
