1
Compounds revisited: A substance composed of two or more elements that are chemically combined
2
Mixtures: compounds or elements that are physically combined; can be separated into their parts- two types of mixtures: HomogeneousHeterogeneous
3
Prefix homo- means sameness In biology- homologous= same structure homozygous=same genes Homogeneous mixture- has the same uniform appearance and composition throughout; very hard to separate parts
4
Solutions- a type of homogeneous mixture; a mixture of two or more substances in a single phase (for example: liquid with liquid); mix a solute and solvent Solute-what is dissolvedSolvent-does the dissolving
5
Think of at least three other homogeneous mixtures. What are they? What do they have in common? *Write an example of a solute and solvent, what solution do they make when combined?
6
Prefix hetero- means different In biology- heterozygous= different genes Heterogeneous mixture- consists of visibly different substances or phases; individual parts are easier to separate
7
Think of at least three other heterogeneous mixtures. Write them down. What do they have in common?
8
Identify whether the following images are homogeneous or heterogeneous mixtures. Write why.
