English 100 Tuesday, 8-26-14 Terms of Argument Claims of Value - attempt to prove that some things are more or less desirable than others. Claims of Value often begin with opinion, but through following the rules of argument, they move from opinion to generally agreed upon ideas or actions.

Evidence - support statements consisting of facts, statistics, and testimony from experts. Motivational Appeals - support statements that the arguer makes to the values and attitudes of the audience to win support for the claim.

English 100 Tuesday, 8-26-14 Terms of Argument The Warrant - a belief or principle that everyone already knows and agrees upon which is either stated or unstated. Many times we assume that an idea is warranted and fail to establish it as so. This opens our arguments to criticism.

English 100 Tuesday, 8-26-14 Audience Even when we write an essay, our basic stance is that of one who is engaged in some form of conversation or dialogue. In this way, the audience must factor in to how we form and express our arguments. In writing your own arguments, you should assume that there is a reader who may not agree with you. In addition to providing abundant evidence for your claim, you should also strive to achieve credibility. According to Aristotle, you achieve credibility through “intelligence, character, and goodwill”.

Paragraphs 2, 3, and 4 are the body of support for the claim. Each paragraph should provide a detailed rationale that directly supports the claim. The final paragraph is the conclusion which may include summary, speculation, and introduction of new questions about the topic.

In addition to various issues, local, state, and federal lawmakers are considering the gun laws that protect and/or restrict individual freedoms. Your task is to develop a convincing argument that gives lawmakers guidance as they make their decision regarding the future of gun laws and gun use.
