2 International Exchange Spend 1 or 2 semesters of your undergraduate degree at a partner university. Take classes which are compatible with your Strathclyde classes Take your exams at the partner university Receive academic transcript at end of your studies Credit transferred to your Strathclyde degree HASS – straightforward pass/fail Engineering and Science – the mark you obtain during your exchange may contribute to your final degree classification. Check with your department about this. Return to Strathclyde to complete your degree Study abroad is not intended to affect duration of your degree US, Canada, Singapore, Hong Kong – Full year or S1 Australia, New Zealand – S2

3 Next Steps :- Applying to host University March 2016 – RIO will confirm the name of your host University – RIO will forward Fact Sheet/further information about your host University. – RIO will nominate you to your host University – Students going abroad in S2 will be nominated later in year (Sept/Oct) time. March/April – Apply to your host University. Host University/RIO will send you application link. – Supporting documents likely to include :- academic transcript available from RIO valid passport (6 months remaining at end of exchange). If not apply now for a new passport! personal statement evidence of funding

4 Evidence of Funding for host University Application Host University may stipulate how much funding you have to provide evidence of. – SAAS Student Loan. Include copy of current year’s award letter with covering note to confirm you intend applying for similar loan in 2017. – Current statement from your bank/building society showing sufficient funds. – Current statement from sponsor’s bank account/building society showing sufficient funds with covering note to confirm they will be financially sponsoring you during your exchange. – Combination of the above – If unsure, speak to Exchange Team in RIO

5 Next Steps :- Acceptance/Visa/Flights – You will receive an acceptance from your host University in May/June time. – Your exchange application is unlikely to be rejected by your host University, although you may need to review some of your classes. – You cannot apply for a visa until you receive an acceptance from your host University. – (Students going to study in the US/Canada will require to attend a personal visa appointment in Belfast or London). June/July time. – It is not recommended you book flights until you have received an acceptance from your host University.

6 Estimate Costs – Tuition fees continue to be paid to Strathclyde during your exchange. Notify SAAS/funding body of your intention to study abroad in your 2016/17 application. – Contact RIO if you are an RUK student – You require to cover the following costs :- Visa application fee Flights Health insurance at host University Housing Subsistence Books Travel insurance free of charge. Register via Pegasus.

7 Funding support/Scholarships Alumni Fund Travel Scholarship to value of £500. Students studying abroad as an optional part of their degree will receive priority for this scholarship. (RIO will circulate details during June/July 2016 once the funding has been confirmed for 2016/17). Professional Body (eg IMechE) Butex Scholarship (RIO will circulate details) SAAS funded students studying abroad as a compulsory part of their degree may be eligible for additional financial support from SAAS towards their travel and medical insurance costs. Pay up front then submit receipts to SAAS who will assess and reimburse you. (EU nationals are not eligible for this payment!).

8 Host University/ Pre-departure Meetings Host University meetings will take place week of 25 April – RIO will circulate dates/times of these meetings – students going to same host University – inbound exchange students from host University – strathclyde returners from previous year Pre-departure meeting (compulsory) week of 24 May or later in June. – attend one pre-departure meeting – will not be able to complete pre-departure checklist on Mobility Online until you have attended a pre-departure meeting. Meetings will take place in December 2016 for students going away in S2

9 Final Academic Approval – You currently have provisional academic approval from Strathclyde to study abroad. – Final Academic approval will be based on your May 2016 exams – For students going abroad in S2, the first semester of your 3 rd year may also be taken into account for final academic approval.
