Write down the name of each Horizon on the correct line on the cover of your flipbook.

O Horizon This is the top layer, the “organic” layer which is made up of mostly dead plant matter (humus).

Topsoil or A Horizon Below the O horizon is the layer called “topsoil” or A Horizon. It has lots of organic matter (humus) and is usually dark in color.

B Horizon Subsoil Layer. Not much organic matter. A lot of mineral leaching has taken place. Sometimes the transition between topsoil and subsoil is very sharp and sometimes they fade into each other.

C Horizon This layer has lots of large rocks mixed in with soil deep underground. Partially weathered rocks with little or no living things.

Bedrock Horizon R This is the parent rock that lies beneath the soil. In some places this can be quite near the surface and in others it is very, very deep.

Color Your Horizons Color the horizons in your book according to the diagram to the right.
