Essential Standard 8.E.2.1 Unit A, 2.1

Warm-up   Enter your test score onto your Test Log in the front of your notebook.   Standard 8.P2.1   Average score 80%   Log on to the test JU3PY3L

Vocabulary  Mold fossil  Cast fossil  Petrified fossil  Preserved fossil  Ice core

Fossils

I. Fossils  Remains or traces of living things from long ago.  Bones or footprints preserved in stone  Provide direct evidence of organisms that lived long ago and changes in the environment.

Organism dies and is buried in sediment Sediment turns into rock over time. Fossil created!!

II. Original Remains  Actual bodies or parts of organisms are called original remains.  Can be trapped in ice, amber (tree sap), or Tar (thick oily liquid).

III. Fossils in Rocks  Mold- visible shape left over by an animal.  Cast- a solid model in the shape of the organism  Petrified- cells are replaced by minerals  Carbon Film- visible layer of carbon producing image  Trace- footprints, trails, holes, feces

IV. Fossils show change  Ice Cores- Tubular sample shows layers of snow and ice over many years.  Scientists can analyze air trapped in ice, dust, ash, and fossils.  Aid in understanding climate and how weather patterns have changed.

Do you know it?   Why are fossils not found in igneous rock layers?   What can rock fossils and original remains show about Earth’s past?   If you uncovered fossils of tropical fish and palm trees, what could you say about the environment at the time the fossil formed?

ASSIGNMENT  Read pages A 45-51. Answer questions 1-6 on page 51. Quiz next class
